MEET THE SIR THOMAS WHARTON ACADEMY GOVERNORS
Chair of Governors
Mr Battle retired as an Assistant Chief Constable with West Yorkshire Police. He has over 30 years experience of working within the public sector and over 20 years of being in a leadership role.
His roles have given him substantial experience in performance management, change management, project and performance management as well as people development. Mr Battle has acted as chair of discipline tribunals and led on diversity and inclusion.
Having now retired Mr Battle is keen to put his experience to good use in a voluntary capacity and we are sure he can achieve this as a Governor within the Maltby Learning Trust.
Vice Chair of Governors
Mrs Chetwynd wants every child to achieve their full potential in a high quality, stimulating learning environment. In her role as a Governor, she wants to provide the Academy with challenge so that all pupils have a fair chance to reach their full potential and of equal importance enjoy and fully engage with their learning experience.
She has extensive experience as an Operations Manager within the financial services sector but for the last 14 years has been a director of her own company dealing with property searches for conveyancing professionals. In addition, she has been a Governor within the primary school phase.
Sir Thomas Wharton Academy, with the support of the parents, can achieve its vision and goals and she feels privileged to be part of the governing body. She is committed to support the school to ensure that it will continue to provide a high quality education for all students.
Mrs Greensill is a Community Governor and has lived in Maltby for 20 years. She has two daughters who have both attended Maltby Academy. Mrs Greensill works as Professional Head of Physiotherapy within a local NHS trust. Mrs Greensill's role involves ensuring that practice and care delivery is safe, efficient and meets professional standards.
Mrs Greensill currently sits on the National Council for the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy which is the elected governing body for the profession. The council agrees policy, supports in the development and promotion of the core vision, ensures the voice of the membership at strategic level and oversees the governance and strategic direction of the profession.
Mrs Greensill is a keen interest in education and is a visiting lecturer at Huddersfield University teaching on their undergraduate programme.
Mrs Greensill has seen significant changes within education in Maltby Learning Trust both aesthetically, culturally and in the standard of learning delivered. The Academies have gone from a place where young people are taught to an environment where they are inspired, supported and prepared to achieve the best of their ability and to have the confidence to aspire to achieve. Mrs Greensill feels that the learning experiences that young people receive are key to their future regardless of whether their pathway is vocational or academic.
Miss Stonier has over 20 years of experience working in Post 16 and 11-16 provision and has successfully set up and established new sixth forms and various forms of specialist provision in Further Education Colleges and Technical environments. Working in education as a senior leader for over 15 years, Miss Stonier has effectively supported school improvement and concentrated on creating cultures which build strong, positive and supportive relationships based on moral values and character education. Her Executive responsibilities at Trust level have included safeguarding, SEN, health, well-being, careers and governance. Miss Stonier’s current position is as an Executive Director in a Specialist 16-25 Autism and SEN College.
Mr Swann joined the Local Governance Committee of Sir Thomas Wharton Academy in 2020. Mr Swann has an extensive range of educational experience gained during 15 years of working in secondary education.
He has an affinity with the local area, having grown up and lived close to the Academy. He attended Swinton Comprehensive school and has a passion for the life chances of all students from the area. Mr Swann is passionate about a fair education for all and has worked hard to ensure underperforming groups, such as pupil premium students, receive an education that allows them to achieve at least as well as others.
Mr Swann has a deep routed link to Maltby Learning Trust. As an NQT Mr Swann started his teaching career at Maltby Academy and was part of Maltby Learning Trust during its inauguration. Mr Swann firmly believes in the vision of the trust and particularly aligns to, being proud of our community, ambitious for all, and Enriching lives by developing character.
During his career Mr Swann has had a host of positions developing a rich experience of leadership and education. At Maltby Academy Mr Swann was a Leading Learner for Teaching and Learning and KS4 Coordinator for Science. He also worked at Sheffield Springs Academy for 5 years as Head of Science faculty gaining a deep understanding of driving curriculum. The next five years of his experience were at Kingswood Academy in Hull. In this time Kingswood Academy moved from OFSTED inadequate to Good, and from the lowest performing secondary school in Hull to the Highest. With a progress score of +1.17 the academy is now in the top one percent
of schools nationally and has been ranked as second-best performing school in a contextualised measure from the University of Bath. Moving from director of Science to Deputy Headteacher, Mr Swann has played a huge part in the school’s rise. Mr Swann is currently in position as Vice Principle at Wath Academy and leads on Curriculum and Attainment, putting in a great position to challenge advise and support leaders at Sir Thomas Wharton.
As a leader he believes communication, clarity and accountability are the basis of high-level performance. By listening to people and creating a dynamic culture within an establishment greatness can be achieved. He always leads by example and ensures the vision remains integral to all actions and initiatives. It is his commitment to work collaboratively with all stakeholders by offering support and challenge. The Academy must be a safe environment for young people serving the needs of its wider community, raising aspirations and enabling students to fulfil their dreams.
Staff Associate Professional Governor
Mrs Guttridge joined the Local Governance Committee as a Parent Governor in March 2021. Mrs Guttridge is a former pupil at Edlington Comprehensive and has three children at Sir Thomas Wharton Academy.
She has over 25 years experience working in the Insurance Industry and brings a wealth of business experience to aid the Governing Body. She completed her MBA in 2003 whilst remaining in full time employment.
Mrs Guttridge is looking forward to working with the school and the Governors to achieve the best for its pupils.
Ms Leech has worked within the secondary and further education sectors for 20 years, with 8 years' experience as a Senior Leader. Her leadership responsibilities include safeguarding, SEND, student experience, wellbeing, widening participation, behaviour, careers and enterprise. In her current position as Assistant Principal at Barnsley College, she had led on achieving Ofsted outstanding for behaviour and attitudes and personal development, led nationally recognised AoC Beacon Award winning provision for mental health and wellbeing, and sits on a number of regional and national steering groups linked to her areas of leadership and expertise.
