JOURNEYS INTO TEACHING
Here at Sir Thomas Wharton Academy, we have a number of partnerships to enable us to facilitate bespoke routes into teaching, from PGCE, School Direct, Teach First and Assessment Only. Here are a number of case studies from the years gone by:
Miss A RICHARDSON
Anna joined Maltby Academy as an NQT in 2009 after gaining QTS with the University of Sheffield through a Post Graduate Certificate in Education. Throughout the following two years, Anna was supported to complete her Masters in Applied Professional Studies in Education at the University of Sheffield, whilst developing her teaching practice as an English teacher. In 2012, Anna was offered the role of Subject Specialist in English, this leadership opportunity was extended to Subject Leader in Media Studies in 2013. Alongside the development of Media Studies, Anna became increasingly involved with Professional Learning Development and mentoring ITTs. In 2015, Anna was supported to step into the role of leading Professional Learning Development and coordinate ITT. This allowed Anna to develop a range of effective leadership practices, which prepared her to successfully secure a place as part of the Senior Leadership Team at Sir Thomas Wharton Academy.

Mr C TAYLOR
Craig joined Sir Thomas Wharton in 2010 having completed his PGCE at Sheffield Hallam University. Craig has progressed through the Science Leadership Structure to secure the position of Director of Science in 2016.

Mr A GENT
Adam began his teaching career in Primaries, teaching Key Stage Two. He transitioned to Secondary Mathematics in 2017 and quickly progressed into a leadership position as Subject Specialist in 2018. Currently, Adam is the Lead Practitioner in Mathematics, he is responsible for developing Numeracy across the Academy and he is a key driver in the recruitment and retention of new teachers in shortage areas.

Miss E DIXON
Ella joined Sir Thomas Wharton Academy as a Teach First trainee. She passed her QTS with flying colours and went on to secure a position as Subject Specialist in her NQT year. As an RQT, Ella is one of our key mentors, has led the Academy Oracy Project and is looking to complete her SENDCO qualifications.

Mr C RODDEN
Chris joined Sir Thomas Wharton Academy in 2017 as part of the Teach First Leadership Development Programme. Chris received excellent mentorship throughout his training and achieved QTS in 2018. Since then, Chris has been awarded with his PGDE and has gone on to secure a position as Subject Leader in History.

Mr B WOODHOUSE
Ben joined Sir Thomas Wharton Academy as an unqualified teacher with Teach First 2013. After gaining QTS and completing his NQT year, Ben became Subject Specialist in Maths. Ben was supported to develop his leadership skills through his appointment as Joint Subject Leader of Maths in 2017, ahead of securing the position of Director of Maths in 2018. Most recently, Ben has been promoted to Associate Assistance Vice Principal (KS4) where his leadership will have a broader impact across all subject areas.

Miss K ELVIN
Kim joined Maltby Academy as an unqualified teacher and after two years of teaching experience, qualified through the Assessment Only route in 2015. As an NQT, Kim quickly progressed into the role of Subject Specialist in Health and Social Care and Sir Thomas Wharton Academy. Since then, Kim has secured her position as Subject Leader in Health and Social Care and BTEC Quality Nominee for Maltby Academy and Sir Thomas Wharton Academy.

Mr J RADBURN
Jamie has been part of our first ever Future Teaching Scholars; he began the course whilst completing his Mathematics undergraduate degree. Jamie started at Sir Thomas Wharton Academy in 2019 as a trainee where he was provided with support from the Hallam Teaching Alliance and the Academy. Jamie has just received QTS and is looking forward to completing his NQT year with Sir Thomas Wharton Academy.

Miss F ALLEN
Felicity’s undergraduate degree is in Psychology, however she was able to complete an English Subject Enhancement course and achieve her QTS through a Doncaster school-based training programme. Felicity has just passed her NQT year with flying colours; she is already an integral part of the English team and is looking forward to developing her role in English.
